Solar power and ECO mode

Article contents

EMS can use solar electricity that the building does not currently need. You choose whether the vehicle should wait during weak sunshine or receive basic charging partly supported by the grid.

Generation is different from surplus

If solar generates 6 kW while the home needs 4 kW, approximately 2 kW of surplus remains. Control therefore needs the energy flow at the shared connection point, not only inverter production. Surplus is assessed as a power balance across phases; each phase current limit still applies.

Two different goals

Choosing a solar mode
ModeWhen surplus cannot cover the vehicle minimum
ECO with minimumCan supplement the functional minimum from the grid if all such minima fit within capacity.
Surplus onlyWaits; there is no minimum supported by grid imports.

AC charging requires at least 6 A on each phase used. On three phases this is about 4.1 kW at 230 V. With 2 kW of surplus, ECO with minimum can obtain the difference from the grid. Surplus only waits under the same conditions.

ECO increases power above the basic minimum only when the available surplus covers the entire load of vehicles controlled by that ECO mode, not just the extra increment.

Original SmartSystem modes

This article explains cloud behaviour. Labels and settings in the original local SmartSystem depend on its version. For its screens, use the local solar and ECO instructions.

Choose a mode for how you use the vehicle

Choose Surplus only if the vehicle can wait for sunshine. Choose ECO with minimum if it should receive basic charging continuously. MAX uses available capacity including grid energy. Modes can change by day and time interval.

COMFORT for one charging session

When you need to charge without sunshine or outside the selected low-cost period, enable COMFORT for that session. It uses available surplus before other economically controlled sessions and may import from the grid. Other vehicles retain protected ECO minima if all those minima fit.

COMFORT does not grant high priority or override technical limits, an explicit user stop or a zero BMS budget. It ends when switched off or when this session ends. The next session does not inherit it automatically.

What to expect when the weather changes

Metering, transmission and vehicle response involve delay. A sudden change in generation or consumption can temporarily cause grid imports even in Surplus only mode. The aim is to use surplus continuously, not to guarantee zero imports at every instant. Read more about time and electricity prices.
