Charging priorities

Article contents

When available power is limited, priorities determine which vehicles or chargers are restricted sooner and which later. For example, company vehicles can take priority over additional charging for visitors.

Three levels in the original local interface

NameMeaning when power is limited
Low PriorityLow priority. Charging is limited sooner.
Medium PriorityMedium priority. Takes precedence over low priority.
High PriorityHigh priority. Receives priority when the available power is allocated.

These names describe the original SmartSystem local interface. Available settings and the specific power distribution method depend on the controller and firmware.

How limits affect charging

Control can reduce current or suspend charging. It must respect all configured limits and the minimum current supported by the vehicle and station. When power is insufficient, even high-priority charging can be limited or suspended.

In the original description, control also considers the current consumption within a group. The same current for a single-phase and a three-phase vehicle does not mean the same power in kW. The exact sequence and thresholds must be checked for the firmware; they are not a universal rule for every configuration.

Examples of priority selection

SituationPossible allocation
Company car parkCompany vehicles with a higher priority; employee charging with a medium or lower priority according to company rules.
Car park for vehicles making frequent tripsTaxis or shared vehicles with a higher priority; other visitors according to operating rules.

A higher priority helps determine how the available power is allocated. It does not guarantee the order in which vehicles reach a full charge or that a vehicle will be ready at a particular time. Parking duration, battery state and the power the vehicle can accept also matter.
