How much can I save on fuel?
Article contents
Compare an electric vehicle and a combustion-engine vehicle over the same distance. For a basic comparison, you need consumption and the energy or fuel price you actually pay.
1. Calculate the cost per 100 km
- Electric vehicle: consumption in kWh per 100 km × electricity price per kWh.
- Petrol or diesel vehicle: consumption in litres per 100 km × fuel price per litre.
For both vehicles, use a comparable period and prices on the same basis, such as both including VAT. If the electric vehicle's consumption comes only from its onboard computer, also account for charging losses. Energy drawn during charging over the monitored period provides a more accurate basis.
2. Consider where you charge
Home, company and public charging prices can differ. If you charge at several locations, use an average price weighted by the energy drawn at each location. Do not calculate all driving using only the lowest available price.
3. Compare the annual difference
Multiply the cost difference per 100 km by annual mileage divided by 100. The result shows the difference in energy or fuel costs for the specified use. Vehicle purchase, servicing, insurance and other operating costs are assessed separately.
Driving style, weather, vehicle and tariff affect the result. It is not a guaranteed saving.
