Can electric vehicle charging generate a profit?

Article contents

The station owner sets prices for their own sharing arrangements. eRoaming uses agreed contractual prices, and the owner can accept or decline its availability. Settlement follows the selected contractual model.

Can electric vehicle charging generate a profit? Yes. The law allows it

A charging station operator can charge a fee, set the price and include both costs and profit. Providing electric vehicle charging does not require an energy business licence. This follows directly from Section 4(7) of Act No. 251/2012 Coll. on Energy.

The Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic also confirmed this interpretation in a practical response: operating a charging station can generate revenue, charging prices are not regulated, and operators can include all incurred costs and an appropriate profit margin.

Put simply:

  • charging may be paid,
  • operators may earn money from charging,
  • the price need not be limited to the electricity purchase price,
  • providing charging itself does not require an electricity supply licence,
  • a charging station may also be managed by another business under a contract.

Selling electricity or providing charging?

This is where most misunderstandings arise.

The Energy Act treats electricity supply as an energy business. At the same time, it specifically and explicitly states:

“Operating a charging station, providing electric vehicle charging and generating electricity when operating electric traction vehicles do not constitute an energy business.”

For a charging station operator, this means paid electric vehicle charging is not treated as conventional licensed electricity supply to an end customer. The law identifies it as a separate activity outside the energy business regime.

An operator can therefore purchase electricity for its site and provide paid charging to drivers through a charging station. Calculating the price from kilowatt-hours consumed does not, by itself, make the operator an electricity supplier requiring an energy licence.

The pricing method is not the only consideration. What matters is that the operator provides electric vehicle charging, which the law explicitly excludes from energy business activities.

The price need not match the electricity purchase price

Operators need not charge only the amount paid to their electricity supplier.

The charging price can cover the full service and operating costs, including:

  • electricity prices and distribution charges,
  • reserved capacity at the supply point,
  • purchasing and depreciating the charging station,
  • installing and servicing the equipment,
  • charging management software,
  • payment processing,
  • invoicing and administration,
  • remote monitoring and customer support,
  • maintenance, repairs and operational risk,
  • the operator's profit.

When directly asked whether a charging station can generate revenue and whether application or software costs can be included in the price, the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic answered clearly:

“Operating a charging station can generate revenue. Setting the charging price is the operator's responsibility and is not regulated. The price may include all incurred costs and an appropriate profit margin.”

The Ministry also stated that another business may manage a charging station under a contractual relationship.

The law allows paid charging. MyAgeVolt makes it work in practice

The ability to set prices and generate profit is only the first part of the solution.

Operators also need to know:

  • who charged,
  • how much energy they consumed,
  • which price should apply,
  • whether they are an employee, tenant, visitor or public user,
  • how to receive payment,
  • how to record the transaction,
  • which documents to send to accounting,
  • how much the operation earned.

This is the purpose of MyAgeVolt, the digital platform for managing charging stations, users, prices, payments and charging data.

MyAgeVolt is the management layer connecting the charging station, its owner and users. It lets operators manage charging without manually recording each transaction or building their own payment and invoicing system.

What MyAgeVolt can do

Setting prices and rules

The operator determines:

  • who may charge,
  • when they may charge,
  • whether charging is free or paid,
  • which price applies to each group,
  • whether the station is available internally only or also to the public.

A company can set different prices for employees, customers and the public. A hotel can offer benefits to guests. A developer can set specific rules for residents and visitors.

User and access management

MyAgeVolt can manage:

  • user accounts,
  • RFID cards,
  • vehicles,
  • work teams and departments,
  • access permissions,
  • company, private and public users.

For internal or specific sharing, administrators see permitted links to the vehicle or user. Public drivers appear anonymized in their overview.

Paid access to a charging station

Owners can make their charging stations available to other drivers and set their own offering price.

MyAgeVolt provides the required digital process:

  • user identification,
  • starting and ending charging,
  • recording consumption,
  • calculating the price,
  • processing payment,
  • recording the transaction,
  • documents for subsequent settlement.

For public sharing through MyAgeVolt, AgeVolt handles the payment process and invoicing flow between the driver, platform and charging station owner.

Overviews, reports and accounting documents

The platform collects charging data and produces clear outputs.

Operators have access to, for example:

  • charging transaction history,
  • electricity consumption,
  • unit prices,
  • payments received,
  • charging revenue,
  • platform fees,
  • accounting reports,
  • data exports or integration with business systems.

For the relevant period, the charging station owner receives a report containing the total collected amount, transaction list, unit prices, platform fee and invoicing details needed for settlement.

Loyalty programmes and integrations

Charging need not operate as an isolated service.

MyAgeVolt can connect charging with the customer's other systems, including:

  • a loyalty programme,
  • a parking system,
  • a hotel or reservation system,
  • a corporate user account,
  • an accounting or ERP system,
  • an internal employee and vehicle management system.

The customer retains control of prices, rules and customer relationships. Charging can be offered under their own brand and integrated into their existing business model.

How settlement through MyAgeVolt works

For paid charging station sharing, the process can work as follows:

  1. The user identifies themselves and starts charging.
  2. MyAgeVolt records consumption and applies the price set by the station owner.
  3. The user pays for charging through the platform's payment process.
  4. The transaction is saved in the history with consumption, price and user information.
  5. The charging station owner receives a monthly report and settlement documentation.
  6. Using this documentation, the owner invoices AgeVolt for revenue from the provided service under the agreed contractual model.

Operators therefore do not need to independently develop an application, payment system, transaction records or a mechanism for calculating and settling each charging session.

Requirements for publicly accessible charging stations

For a publicly accessible charging station, the law requires the operator to notify the Regulatory Office for Network Industries.

The start, change or termination of publicly accessible charging station operation must be reported to the office within 30 days.

This is a notification, not an application for an energy business licence. This procedure does not involve the Regulatory Office approving the business plan or charging price. Under the Ministry of Economy's position, the operator sets the price.

Frequently asked questions

Am I selling electricity when providing charging?

You are providing electric vehicle charging. Under the Energy Act, this is a specific activity that Section 4(7) explicitly excludes from energy business activities.

Do I need an electricity supply licence?

Not solely because you operate a charging station and provide paid charging. The law does not treat this activity as an energy business.

Can I charge more than my electricity purchase price?

Yes. The Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic explicitly states that the price may include all incurred costs and an appropriate profit margin.

Can I set different prices for different users?

Yes. MyAgeVolt supports different rules and prices for groups such as employees, tenants, guests, customers and the public.

Who handles payments and settlement?

For paid sharing through MyAgeVolt, the platform records transactions, handles the payment process and prepares reports and settlement documentation. The specific invoicing procedure follows the contractual model between the station owner and AgeVolt.

A charging station can be more than a cost

Slovak law allows charging station operators to provide paid charging and generate profit from the service. This is not licensed electricity supply under the energy business regime.

MyAgeVolt turns this legal option into a working operating model. It gives charging station owners tools for setting prices, managing users, receiving payments, recording consumption, reporting and settlement.

You determine who charges, under which conditions and at what price. MyAgeVolt keeps the whole process simple and transparent.
